BODY MODIFICATION AND YOU
As Hailee Steinfeld said in one of her songs, “it’s okay if you wanna change the body that you came in,” well, from this, we all need to understand that it is okay to do body modifications. It is not something to be ashamed of. Go to the gym if you feel like it, stay at home if you feel like, get a tattoo if you want to, get yourself some piercings if you tend to. Fascinated by some periodic, random, new body modification, go for it.
Body modification is something which we do mostly for non-medical reasons such as ritual activities, aesthetic reasons, religious reasons, or to show self-expression.
These body modifications are being practiced for thousands of years, but it has just begun to gain popularity in recent years. There are many body modifications. Let talk about them one by one.
BODY MODIFICATION; TATTOOS:
Do you also want to get a tattoo just because you saw someone with one and thought it is cool? Well, one of the most common arts of body modifications is a tattoo. A tattoo is made by inserting indelible ink into a layer of skin to change its pigment. Nowadays, it hasused not only as a form of expression but also as a form of identification.
Today, people generally get tattoos to share their personal stories or their views over something. Well, I would get yourself one if you want to.
“…The Vanity looks best when it’s wrapped in steel.”
You will always find a girl with her nose or ear piercing, now boys too. It is a part of our culture and tradition opted from our ancient history and not going there. It is not always due to religious or spiritual reasons, but others get piercing for self-expression, aesthetic value, etc.
Interestingly, Elaine Davidson (Brazil/UK) holds the Guinness Book of Worlds Records for getting pierced for a total of 4,225 times as of 8 June 2006.
Everyone has their reasons to get themselves pierced, but primitive tribes believed that demons and spirits could enter a body through the ear, and these demons and spirits are supposed to be repelled by metal, so ears were often pierced.
Strangest of all, it includes scratching, burning, or cutting designs, pictures, words into the skin as a permanent body modification.
Branding is a widely used form of scarification. In this, a hot piece of metal is used to burn patterns into the skin. While scarification is growing in popularity, it is still not a well-known procedure and should be performed by a qualified artist.
Very uncommon and a scary body modification which people do is splitting. It is an acct of splitting a body part, usually the tongue.
A tongue that has been properlysplit will function as two completely independent tongues that can do anything a normal tongue can.
Well, in this case, a tiny decorative piece of jewellery is implanted within the superficial, interpalpebral conjunctiva of the eye.
It was first designed at the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery (https://www.niios.com/ )and marketed there under JewelEye.
Body modifications are getting popular day by day. The artist who performs these is getting more and more skilled and learning new techniques every day. Earlier tattoos were not acceptable by society, but now it is a symbol of expression. Let us see whether this society accepts the other not so common modifications with time or not because the word “normal” is not the same for everyone.
But always remember, “think before you choose to have a body modification done.”
Sometimes, it can go wrong as well, and then you will have to regret it for the rest of your life. Lastly, you should have it done by a professional artist.
